The main Research Centres in Sardinia are located in the SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL PARK, in the CNR (National Research Council) facilities and in AGRIS (Agency for research In Agriculture).
- SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL PARK
It is a system of advanced infrastructures and services for technological innovation and valorisation of research. Born from a conjoined effort of Region European Union, it has two offices, one in Pula and one in Alghero. In the Park there are ten technological platforms, consisting of laboratories and scientific equipment. In addition to the general logistics, maintenance and reception services, the Park offers a wide range of services for technological development.
The headquarters, in Pula, is 40 km from Cagliari and occupies an area of 160 hectares, with 25 thousand square meters covered. It is the basis for companies and research centres specializing in information and communication technologies, biomedicine, health technologies, bioinformatics and energy.
The site has research infrastructures, such as the enclosure with barries of about 900 square meters and ICT technology platforms, bioinformatics, genotyping and sequencing, pharmacology, prototyping and medical devices, high throughput screening and Dtv.
The seat of Alghero, in Tramariglio, occupies an area of 3 and a half hectares. The complex, owned by the University of Sassari, consists of about 10 thousand square meters of covered area and is divided into three independent buildings, surrounded by greenery. Alghero hosts companies and centres that operate in IT and telematics, biomedicine, health technology and industrial biotechnology.
Located within the Scientific and Technologic Park of Pula, the Crs4 is a multidisciplinary research centre which currently employs 205 people between employees and associates. Its goal is to study, develop and apply innovative solutions through a multidisciplinary approach, using highly specialized skills and knowledge. On this basis, Crs4 stipulates agreements with the academic, business and scientific world, also participating in relevant national and international projects. The technological development and scientific research of Crs4 focus on enabling computational technologies and their application in the biomedical, biotechnological and information society, energy and environment fields. Among Crs4 strong points is the High Performance Computing (Hpc) centre which uses one of the largest concentrations of computing power in Italy and, thanks to the very high specialization of the Crs4 staff, provides an exceptional level of flexibility in the use of cutting-edge hardware. The center also manages a high-throughput genotyping and next-generation sequencing platform, directly linked to its own computational resources. This synergy is unique in Italy and allows Crs4 to design and execute analysis procedures for studies of previously unthinkable dimensions.
The Crs4 put next to computing and network resources, hardware for state-of-the-art data-intensive exploration and analysis. The available systems range from high-resolution display walls to experimental light-field displays capable of providing full-3D interactive images at the same time to multiple observers.
The National Research Council carries out, promotes and coordinates basic and applied research activities, promotes the internationalization of the Italian scientific and technological research system to increase its competitiveness and visibility, and participates in major research programs. In Sardinia it is present with 15 centres between institutions (2) and territorial branches of institutes (13), among which stand out those set up for studies in the fields of genetics, neuroscience, pharmacology, coastal marine environment, materials, geoengineering, food production, science of climate, biomolecular chemistry, biomedical technologies, food production.
The Institute of Genetic and Biomedical Research, which deals with the identification and study of the function of genes involved in monogenic diseases and complex diseases, is based in Monserrato and is still today one of the main institutions for the regulation of globin genes and of hematopoiesis, improvement of prevention and treatment of this disease and the development of gene therapy.
The Institute of Mediterranean European History carries out research, development, technological transfer and training on the history and cultures of the Mediterranean and its external projections from a long-term perspective from the Middle Ages to the contemporary age. The main lines of research concern the history of Mediterranean societies, with reference to the integration between the cultures of the area and the migratory processes, the valorisation of cultural heritage and the analysis of cultural productions of the Spanish-speaking area.
It is the regional agency for scientific research, experimentation and technological innovation in the agricultural, agro-industrial and forest sectors. It works to promote sustainable development and biodiversity. Its centres are:
Azienda sperimentale Palloni
Active since 1985, it is located in Palloni, in the province of Oristano, in the Tirso valley. It carries research in the field of vegetables.
Azienda sperimentale S’Appassiu
It is in the countryside of Uta and covers an area of 40 hectares. The research activity is mainly aimed at protected crops and open field horticulture.
Azienda sperimentale San Michele
It is located in Ussana and extends over 400 hectares. It does research on cereals, forage crops and improvement of pastures. More recently he experiments the possible use for energy purposes of rapeseed and sorghum.
It is located in the homonymous hamlet in the Municipality of Sassari and is dedicated to the study and examination of problems related to nutrition, rational breeding of livestock, improvement of the quality of sheep's milk, goat's milk and derived products.
Research centres in fruit-growing and plant nursery
They carry out research and experimentation activities in the regional and extra-regional area, with experimental programs developed between Agris companies and private companies, located in various parts of the island.
Chemical-physical analysis laboratory
It is in Cagliari, within the headquarters of the Service for research, environmental studies, crop protection and quality of production. It is equipped with the most sophisticated scientific equipment and operates in compliance with the requirements of ISO 17025.
